Located in the Beiras Region, it designates the mountain range where the highest altitudes in mainland Portugal are found. Its highest point, 1993 metres high and called Torre, makes it the second highest mountain in Portugal (only Pico Mountain, in the Azores, exceeds it by 358 metres).
Serra da Estrela is an area of landscape integrated in the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela, which after its constitution on 16 July 1976 became the largest protected area on Portuguese soil.
The Serra is also rich from the hydrological point of view, numerous streams flow from this massive. You can follow the course of the great Portuguese rivers from their sources – the Mondego in the Mondeguinho, the Zêzere in Covão de Ametade and the Alva in the Rossim Valley are stunning places.

In winter, Serra da Estrela is the only place in Portugal where you can have fun in the snow with your skis, sleds, or snowboard. In summer, the region's river beaches are the most obvious destination, but the Serra da Estrela Natural Park also offers you 25 lakes for a refreshing refuge.

Be sure to visit Belmonte, birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral. Discover the Jewish heritage of the last Sephardic Jews in Portugal through the streets and houses of this medieval village.
