Schist Villages

A unique cultural landscape in Central Portugal. Mountains as far as the eye can see, water gushing from the earth in countless rivers and streams, and one of the starriest skies in the world.

Here you will discover a new world dating back to prehistoric times, restored and offering natural and heritage sites of interest, places where you feel like walking, taking photographs, breathing the pure mountain air, diving into the river beaches and sleeping for a while in retreat.

Here you can do all that and much more.

There are 27 schist villages to discover, twelve of them in the Serra da Lousã area, five in the Serra do Açor, six along the Zêzere River and four along the Tagus-Ocreza. All of them are in the territory of Central Portugal, between the coast and the interior of the country.

When the identity of these lands and people seemed forgotten, houses, stories, smiles were recovered and, with great taste, an enchanting territory that has, already won awards as a tourist destination was created. A treasure between Castelo Branco and Coimbra.

Villages where the stone used is that of their mountains, whose flavours delight all palates, whose religious motifs and stories were remembered with enthusiasm to bring them back to life.

We invite you to feel the experiences of each one of them through their people and stories.
