This new sport, which in practice is a foil, is a solid object shaped such that, when placed in a moving fluid at a suitable angle of attack, lift is substantially greater than drag. If the fluid is a gas, the foil is called an airfoil and if the fluid is water, the foil is called a hydrofoil.
The incredible creation of hydrofoils allows the boards to glide through the water with minimal resistance and friction. The design of the foil forces the water passing through it to accelerate in a downward fashion. This creates an equal upward force that can lift the board out of the water. Foil needs some power when starting and this can be achieved when using waves, boats, foil kites or SUP paddles. They can be used with many types of water sport boards, mainly foil surfboards, kite foil boards, and windsurf boards.
