Lagoa de Óbidos, located between Caldas da Rainha (Foz do Arelho and Nadadouro) and Vila de Óbidos (Vau and Santa Maria), is the most extensive coastal lagoon system on the Portuguese coast with a total area of approximately 6.9Km2. In addition, it is the largest saltwater lagoon in Europe and just 15 minutes away from the medieval town.
In winter or summer, it is possible to practise sailing.
If you don't have the necessary equipment, don't worry, as there are several nautical schools that can provide you with the necessary materials and even classes to learn how to sail a boat.
This Lagoon is also considered one of the best places along the coast to observe water birds such as the mallard, kingfisher, waterfowl, interrupted-collar plover, and sandpiper, among many others… In addition to flip flops and a bathing suit, take your binoculars so you can observe them!
