Stand up paddle or “SUP”, as it is affectionately called in various parts of the world, is a sport that originated in Hawaii and the Polynesian Islands.
Derived from surfing and the Hawaiian canoe, stand up paddle became popular after surfers and photographers used longboards to photograph surfers in Hawaii. They climbed onto big boards with paddles to get the best shots of the waves.
Whichever SUP modality you practise or intend to practise:
- SUP Race, or speed stand op paddle
- SUP Wave, or stand up paddle waves
- SUP Fun, a modality whose main objective is paddling for fun, without competition. Families, children, and amateur athletes are primarily responsible for the growth of sport.
In Central Portugal, it is possible to practise stand up paddle in numerous places and in all Maritime and Nautical Stations.
It is not necessary to come loaded with your equipment as there are many schools that, in addition to teaching the sport, also provide equipment for those who need it.
